Ingredients

Herby Cream Cheese Spread
  • 4 oz cream cheese softened to room temperature
  • 2 tbsp fresh dill finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp fresh chives finely chopped
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp kosher salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper
Sandwich Assembly
  • 4 slices whole wheat bread or multigrain, high quality
  • 1 large summer tomato Heirloom or Beefsteak, very ripe
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper to taste, for tomatoes

Equipment

  • Toaster or Skillet
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Serrated knife
  • Cutting board

Method

  1. In a small bowl, thoroughly mix the softened cream cheese with the dill, chives, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined and fluffy.
  2. Using a serrated knife, slice the tomato into thick rounds. Place on a paper towel and lightly season the tops with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Toast the bread slices until deeply golden brown and crisp to support the wet ingredients.
  4. Divide the cream cheese mixture evenly among the four slices of toasted bread, spreading it generously from edge to edge to create a moisture barrier.
  5. Layer the seasoned thick tomato slices onto two of the bread slices.
  6. Top with the remaining bread slices (cream cheese side down), slice in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not refrigerate your tomatoes before using; keep them at room temperature for the best flavor and texture.
