Ingredients

Base
  • 4 large navel oranges unblemished, perfectly round
Glossy Glaze
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp orange extract or Grand Marnier, optional
Decorations
  • 1 tbsp clear piping gel or light corn syrup
  • 1 container edible metallic squares gold or silver leaf, pre-cut
  • 1 container food-safe edible glitter
  • 1 pinch edible star sprinkles optional

Equipment

  • Culinary tweezers
  • Small Saucepan
  • Pastry brush
  • Soft food-safe paintbrushes

Method

  1. Wash oranges thoroughly, dry completely, and cut exactly in half.
  2. In a saucepan, simmer sugar and water for 5-7 minutes until it forms a light syrup. Add extract, then let cool.
  3. Using a pastry brush, generously coat the cut flesh of the oranges with the cooled syrup.
  4. While tacky, use a dry brush to tap edible glitter and star sprinkles over the glossy flesh.
  5. Turn the orange halves over. Paint a very thin layer of clear piping gel or corn syrup over the exterior rind.
  6. Using culinary tweezers, painstakingly apply the edible metallic squares in circular rows until the rind looks like a disco ball.
  7. Use a dry, soft makeup brush to gently press the metallic tiles down and polish the surface. Serve immediately.

Notes

Store in a cool, dry place. Do not refrigerate after applying the metallic leaf, as condensation will dull the mirror effect.
